Whole of Home assessment
Ecomaxhomes provides Whole of Home assessments for residential projects across New South Wales, meeting the household energy use provisions introduced under the updated National Construction Code (NCC). Where a NatHERS rating covers a home’s thermal shell, Whole of Home goes further — assessing the energy impact of the appliances, hot water systems, lighting, and (where applicable) on-site solar and battery systems that make up everyday household energy use.
What Is a Whole of Home Assessment?
Whole of Home assessment uses a points-based system to evaluate a dwelling’s total annual energy consumption and greenhouse gas impact, covering heating and cooling, hot water, lighting, cooktops, pool/spa pumps, and renewable energy generation. Homes must achieve a minimum points target, giving builders and designers flexibility in how they meet compliance — for example, offsetting a standard hot water system with rooftop solar.
It works alongside, not instead of, your NatHERS thermal shell rating — most residential projects need both to obtain full NCC energy compliance.
Our Whole of Home Services
Whole of Home Points Assessment
We model your home’s appliance, hot water, lighting, and renewable energy specifications to calculate its Whole of Home score against the required target for your climate zone.
Combined NatHERS + Whole of Home Certification
For most residential projects, we deliver NatHERS and Whole of Home assessments together, streamlined into a single coordinated certification process.
Specification Advice
If your initial appliance and system selections don’t meet the required points target, we advise on practical adjustments — hot water system type, solar PV sizing, appliance upgrades — to reach compliance without unnecessary cost.
Multi-Dwelling & Townhouse Whole of Home
For townhouse and multi-unit developments, we assess each dwelling individually, coordinated with our multi-dwelling NatHERS and BASIX services.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a Whole of Home assessment as well as a NatHERS rating?
For most residential projects under the current NCC energy provisions, yes — NatHERS covers the thermal performance of the building shell, while Whole of Home covers the energy impact of appliances, hot water, lighting, and on-site renewables. Both are generally required together.
What happens if my home doesn’t meet the Whole of Home points target?
We’ll advise on adjustments — such as upgrading the hot water system, increasing solar PV capacity, or changing appliance specifications — to help the design reach the required score.
Can solar panels help meet Whole of Home requirements?
Yes. Rooftop solar generation contributes positively to your Whole of Home score and can offset lower-performing elements elsewhere in the assessment.
Is Whole of Home assessment required for townhouses and units?
Yes, where applicable under your project’s NCC pathway. We assess each dwelling individually and coordinate this with NatHERS and BASIX for the full development.
How is Whole of Home assessed alongside BASIX in NSW?
We coordinate both assessments so your project’s NSW BASIX requirements and NCC Whole of Home requirements are addressed together, avoiding conflicting specifications.
